German Higher education system

Germany has attracted many International students after adopting Bologna process. A significant outcome of the Bologna Process is that German higher education institutions now have bachelor’s, master’s, and research programs, which give international students the flexibility to enter the higher education system at a level that best suits them. As a result, now there are 1,800 international programs most of which are taught in English.


German Higher education hierarchy

Public Higher education Institutions:

  • The reason for attracting more international students is No / very less Tuition Fee in state run German universities.

  • Approximately 60 percent of higher education institutions in Germany are funded by the Federal Government and the federal states, meaning their funding body is the state.

  • Each of the 16 federal states has its own higher education acts and guidelines.

  • In addition, universities in Germany are very independent.

  • Both admission and application deadlines will largely depend on the particular university.

  • Most of the students prefer to study in public universities because of no/very tuition fee also the quality of teaching is similar at both public and private universities.

Private Higher education institutions:

  • The states approved but privately operated institutions fall under this category.

  • Approximately 30 percent of higher education institutions in Germany are private operated institutions.

  • Only 5.5 percent of students attend private universities this is due the fact that sometimes you have to pay high tuition fees.

The remaining 10 percent of higher education institutions are run by one of the churches in Germany.


Types of University in Germany:

1. University : Focus on science

  • University offer strong theoretical and academically-oriented degree program.

  • University emphasise research.

  • Universities specialise in a specific subject area are called technical universities (Technische Universität, TU) or colleges of education (Pädagogische Hochschule, PH).

In universities there are three types of programs:

1. Bachelors

2. Masters

3. Research


Bachelors:

  • Most of the undergraduate (Bachelor’s) program in Germany are taught in German. So, if you choose to do your bachelor’s degree in Germany then you should be able to speak in German fluently.

  • The duration of study for Bachelor program depends up on the field you choose.

Masters:

  • But there are more choices for master program

  • There are many Masters programs that are taught in English

  • Duration of study for Full-time master program: 2 years(4 semesters)

2. University of applied science : Focus on practice

  • Universities of Applied Sciences (Fachhochschulen and Hochschulen für angewandte Wissenschaften) offer practice-oriented academic courses.

  • The focus is more on professional application than theory.

  • In most Universities of Applied Sciences it is not possible to do Doctorate.

  • If you would like to pursue a doctorate (earn a PhD) at some point, a university is the right place for you.

  • The range of subjects comprises fields such as technology, economics, social work or medicine.

3. University of fine arts

  • In art, film and music colleges you can study artistic subjects, such as music, architecture, visual arts, drama, dance, industrial and fashion design.

  • At universities for modern media, directors, cinematographers, screenwriters and other film and television professionals are trained.

  • To get admission in these universities you must demonstrate your specific talent during entrance examination.

  • In most arts, film and music colleges the medium of Language is German.

Dual study program:

A dual study programme combines academic studies with experience in a company and vocational training. Dual study programmes are very popular in Germany due to their practical orientation.
